MARCH 6, 2011: SPOTLIGHT CAVE HIKE
Read MoreSpotlight Cave has a huge, totally submerged opening to the Pacific Ocean. The cavern narrows from front to back. About half way back is this skylight hole, which (around noon) allows a beam of light to penetrate down through the cave. For photos from inside the cave, see the following link: http://www.optimimagery.com/THE-UNIVERSE-BENEATH/FUN-DIVES-AND-DIVE-BUDDIES/Banzai-and-Spotlight-Cave/8379517_rJuWW
When the ocean surface is wavy, surges pass into and out of the cave, causing the water surface here to rise and fall. In extreme conditions, the surface will literally explode out of the opening at times. The ocean was moderately wavy on this day, giving us an active but safe show.
