From VANCOUVER ISLAND

• The M.V. Coho, a 341-foot long, 5,135-ton ferry with a capacity of 115 vehicles has served the route between Port Angeles, WA and Victoria, B.C. for 50 years. We caught the last sailing for the night.
• The lights of Port Angeles become smaller and dimmer in the distance as we sail under a nearly-full moon.
• Dinner under sail.
• British Columbia Parliament Buildings, finished in 1893. The statue commemorates Canadian war dead.

• The Fairmont Empress Hotel opened January 23, 1908. It is considered one of the most recognized landmarks in Victoria. Checking on the internet, I'm really a bit surprised at the prices for staying here: A room for 2 apparently runs about $170 per night. Not cheap, I know, but with this being such a famous place, I expected more.

It is also widely known for afternoon tea. It's my understanding that one must generally reserve a space about 2 weeks in advance. The "tea" basically includes a meal, and runs about $60 per person (Canadian). By the way, I have never stayed here, nor have I had the afternoon tea. It does sound like fun, though.......Maybe next time!

See their web site at http://www.fairmont.com/empress/ to learn more and to reserve your room and tea time!
• I love the Orca topiary just north of the Empress.
• The Empress.
• Looking over Victoria Inner Harbor. You see the ferry (M.V. Coho) behind Olga.
• Olga and inner harbor (and M.V. Coho) reflected in Mario's sunglasses.
• I think they may have used too much Miracle Grow on their tulips!
• North of Victoria is Butterfly Gardens. This is a totally amazing indoor tropical-like Paradise with butterflies and beautiful moths fluttering all around.

• Atlas Moth.
• Here you can get an idea just how big these atlas behemoths are. Amazing, as the sign says: They can stay in their cocoon for 5 years, and then live for only 3 to 5 days once they emerge. As moths, they also do not feed. 3 to 5 days to look for a mate, have sex, lay eggs, and then die, I guess.
• I couldn't resist getting a close-up of an atlas moth antenna. Should get some pretty good reception, I would think.

• Yum! Banana!
• Butterflies galore!
• In the center is a terrarium with several species of small frogs, and this friendly little lizard -- here trying to shake hands with Mario.
