  • 1978. Jimmy Carter was President of the United States. We were enjoying our time at Painted Dessert in Arizona. <br />

Actually, the tourism marketing folks in Las Vegas gave out some free stays in their fair city that year. Bev and I just happened to get such an offer. These photos were all taken on our trip from Stillwater, OK to Las Vegas, NV and back. They are all slides (mostly Kodachrome and Ektachrome) which I digitized today (1/1/2011).
  • Don't you just dig the jump suit? As GREASE, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John was opening in theaters, Bev and I were studying this huge slab of polished petrified wood at Petrified Forest National Park.
  • As the very first Garfield comic strip was appearing in newspapers around the country, we were enjoying the Petrified Forest.
  • Lee Iacocca was working at Ford Motor Company as we looked around the visitor center on the Arizona side of Lake Meade. He was fired a couple of months later.
  • The month after our trip (July, 1978), Pete Rose would tie the National League hitting streak. For now, however, I was content to press my hand against this prickly cactus at the Lake Meade visitor center.
  • COLUMBO was still being broadcast on NBC TV while I perched between these two cycads (Lake Meade in the background).
  • In the same year that the first ever Cellular Mobile Phone was introduced, we enjoyed walking the streets of Las Vegas.
  • This is also the same year that SPACE INVADERS debuted in game arcades.
  • Average cost of a gallon of gas while we were walking by the MGM Grande: 63 cents.
  • The same year as the first "test tube baby" (Louise Brown) was born, I discovered the distinct pleasure of standing beneath a yucca tree in the Utah (or maybe Nevada) dessert.
  • While others were seeing the premier of CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, we were navigating through a mile-long tunnel near Zion National Park. Don't pay any attention to the bottom line of the sign!
  • We had to miss episodes of LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, opting instead to sit under old trees on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon (a highly recommended place, by the way -- although it has likely changed a bit since 1978).
  • THE LOVE BOAT was playing on T.V.'s around the country, but we didn't need it in our love cabins. Still on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. I wonder if these cabins are still there?
  • As Leonid Brezhnev was leading the Soviet Union, we decided to enjoy this cute little store-in-a-cave just north of the Grand Canyon North Rim. They had a great ultraviolet mineral display.
  • Koby Bryant was still a couple of months from being born as we gazed over Bryce Canyon.
  • This is one place I always thought I would get back to. Still may.
  • The old critics were singing "Why do we always come here. I guess we'll never know. It's like a kind of torture, to sit and watch the show!" in the introduction of each MUPPET SHOW episode as Bev and I slept on the banks of Glen Canyon Reservoir.
  • JAWS 2, NATIONAL LAMPOON'S ANIMAL HOUSE, AND STAR WARS EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE were all released the same year that Bev and I enjoyed a night in our tent north of Telluride, Colorado.
  • Ahhh! I love a place where I can walk in the snow in June! Near the summit of Million Dollar Highway, between Ouray and Silverton, Colorado.
  • Woody Allen's ANNIE HALL won 4 Oscars this year. I think sleeping in our tent on Wolf Creek Pass in Colorado was much more exciting than trying to watch ANNIE HALL (I've tried, but have never made it all the way through the movie).
