Scott, Steven, and Kathleen look at some of the awesome wave spray as we head down toward the Spotlight Cave Skylight. The little "towers" in the background are memorial markers at Banzai Cliff, where Japanese and natives threw their families over and then jumped themselves once it became obvious that the Americans were going to successfully take Saipan. It is gut wrenching to hear some of the recordings of American GI's who looked on helplessly as they watched so many terrified people hurl themselves to their deaths.

  • Beneath us is a submarine cavern with a large opening to the open ocean. It is called Spotlight Cave because near noon the sun shines directly down through this hole and into the cave, creating an ethereal beam of light for adventurous SCUBA divers. From the top it is awesome to watch as the waves surging into the cave cause the water here to burst upward and then to drop away. You can also see some spray of a breaking wave in the background.
  • This short video allows you to see and hear the action a bit better. Notice the little rainbow (also visible in the previous photo) when the water rises and shoots off mist.
  • Kathleen got a little wet just after this photo was taken. The Spotlight Cave area is one of many awesome sights awaiting those willing to be a bit adventuresome on our little island of Saipan.<br />
