APRIL 5, 2014: CONCRETE RESORT HOTEL

A BIT OF SAIPAN RECENT HISTORY......
One of the first things you notice on arrival here is this huge concrete monstrosity just a few blocks from the airport. The story I have been told is that this was to be a high-class resort, but the company building it declared bankruptcy and was not able to pay the workers. So, in the spirit of revenge, the workers poured concrete down all the plumbing and did other acts of mischief to render the building impossible to sell.

  • Until very recently this was surrounded by high fence of lots of bushes and brambles. I've always wondered what it would be like inside. Bev and I noticed that not only has the fence been removed, but the bushes have been whacked and there are no no-trespassing signs! So, we decided to get a look.
  • Looking back at my Escape from what was going to be a lobby.
  • The orange, rusted thing to your left is a concrete mixer (I think -- or perhaps for mixing asphalt roofing compound?). We are on the roof now, looking up at the towers.
  • Looking down the "back side," onto the planned courtyard.
  • Looking north, toward Tapachau, from the courtyard side.
  • Bev is standing in front of the elevator shaft containment.

  • Looking down over the old mixer and toward Tapachau.
  • Looking south.
  • Bev in one of the towers.

  • Looking down the airport side (opposite the courtyard) at my Escape.
  • Likely this was planned to be a penthouse suite, with large windows on the top floor.
  • Just outside the north Courtyard Exit.
  • Looking up from the north Courtyard Exit.
  • Near the southernmost wall, looking at the Courtyard Face of the building.
  • Bricks still awaiting placement.
  • Bev walking down a hallway, by rooms to never house guests.
  • Some call it "fine art." Some "contemplative photography." Others probably call it a waste of time. But most passionate photographers are constantly on the lookout for interesting and simple patterns of light and shadow.
