  • Awaiting the sunrise above Hidden Beach. It really is quite hidden when you are looking for it before sunrise.....
  • The sun is getting closer! And you can start to see where the beach is!

  • The actual sunrise was a bit anticlimactic this morning -- rising behind clouds such that you could not really tell when the sun had come up. So, once it was obvious that it had indeed risen, we decided to head down to Hidden Beach.
  • Through the brambles and down to the beach....

  • The sun / clouds put on a pretty dramatic show after all.
  • We don't get jellyfish here very often, but there were hundreds of Indo-Pacific Portuguese Man-O-War jellyfish on the beach this morning.
  • These are babies, and this species (Physalia utriculus) is smaller than the Atlantic Portuguese Man O War (these attain a "sail" size of about 6 inches, whereas individuals of the more famous Atlantic variety are about twice that large). Just as their larger cousins, however, these critters have stinging cells in their tentacles (the blue part which Danielle has wrapped around the stick). The sting can be painful, but there have never been any known fatalities (unlike the Atlantic species).
  • As you can see, they were quite numerous. This type of jelly fish has no means of locomotion, so they are totally dependent on currents and winds for traveling.
