MAY 26, 2014: FORBIDDEN ISLAND

Forbidden Island: It's my understanding that the ancient Chamorro revered this as the home to many Spirits, and a place to not be approached except with utmost caution and respect. Indeed. in the 12 years since I have moved here, there have been more than a few people meet their end down here. So, indeed, it is a place to be approached with great respect. A prudent caution and common sense go along way toward making any outing down here enjoyable and safe. Having said that, if you would like to see what Forbidden looks like under a full moon as the stars "streak" across the sky for a 13 minute exposure, take a look at http://www.optimimagery.com/NOCTURNES-1/CNMI-NOCTURNES/SAIPAN-NOCTURNES-2011/i-Tfx2bQn/0/X3/ac%20forbidden-X3.jpg

  • Add Nigel.
  • About 2/3 of the way down the trail, the last "overlook" before the steep drop to the beach.
  • Heading down the steep drop.
  • And, we made it!
  • Sometimes I find the mundane small stuff fascinating. Worm-weathered drift wood with an aqua thread.
  • Danielle and Travis.

  • In the cool pool cave.
  • And what does a good daughter do when her Mom gets stuck on a rock? Grab the camera, of course!
  • Time to head back.
  • The old CIA satellite eavesdropping post. Unlike current stuff in the news, this was built to listen in on Eastern Block countries (or at least that's what we are told). When the CIA pulled out, they left it, as one of the World's largest pieces of litter, to be at the whim of the ravages of time. I'm kinda torn about this kind of thing: Part of me thinks it's a shame that our government does this kind of thing and then does not clean up after itself. But, part of me enjoys being able to show this to people. I am afraid, however, that very soon it will be falling apart in ways which may endanger kids and others who may frequent this area without looking closely for signs of where NOT to go. I guess the CIA and the U.S. government in general have more pressing concerns, apparently (like keeping tabs on your phone calls and internet usage).
