  • As the shadow covered more than half the moon, I had to switch my exposure to get detail and color from the shadow portion.  Unfortunately, that ends up overexposing the lighted portion.  This is not too different from what it really looked like, however, since our eyes make a similar adjustment as the moon (and entire environment, actually) darkens with the advancement of Earth's shadow over the surface of the moon.

  • Earth's atmosphere diffuses light which passes through.  That results in some "light fill" into the shadow (eclipse).  It's my understanding that the exact color of this "fill" depends on how clean Earth's atmosphere is.

  • While all the reports said that this would be a total eclipse, the light area never really totally left the moon's face.  Apparently the moon was just barely completely inside Earth's shadow.  At a little over 4 minutes, this was the shortest total eclipse we will have in the 21st Century.
