Also called "crocodile" by many locals due to the snout you see in the background.

  • PACBAR RADAR

    PACBAR RADAR

Built in 1988 - 89 to track satellites launched from the Eastern Block, this massive "PACific BARrier" radar functioned only until 1995. Apparently the U.S. government had better things to do than to think about picking up after themselves, so they left this huge monstrosity here. It's my understanding that it is now an official toxic waste site (there is a subterranean 30,000 gallon liquid storage tank immediately behind me as I take this photo) , but that there are apparently no plans by our benevolent and caring federal government to do anything about that.

  • OLD SENTINEL

    OLD SENTINEL

Manufactured in England and sold to Japan prior to hostilities, this anti-ship canon never fired upon an enemy ship. The U.S. invasion came on the other side of Saipan.

You can see Forbidden Island on the horizon behind Jason (way off in the distance).

    JAPANESE LIGHTHOUSE

Amber stands on the track upon which at one time rested a housing for a massive beacon, able to shine way out to sea. The lighthouse was built 1934 and was used until the U.S. invasion in 1944.

One of the nicest views on Saipan. You can see Managaha island out in the lagoon.
