SEPT 19, 2019: TANKS AND ROWERS
VIDEO: TANKS AND ROWERS (And a little fairy tern)
Click on the photo and allow it to buffer a bit.
The army tanks, as it has been told to me, ended up here because someone read the tide table wrong and launched an invasion at high tide. I have been told there there were several here at one time, but most were taken away after the war. These 2 were left in place intentionally as a memorial.
The outrigger rowers are pretty active. I understand that they do a fair amount of competition with other Pacific islands, and they practice at least once or twice per week during acceptable weather. In years past they have even put together relays paddling all the way around the island (allowing tired paddlers to jump out and fresh ones to take their places at various locations).
A white tern (Gygis alba, also called fairy tern or common tern {but sharing those names with other similar species seen elsewhere}) joins us at about 2:30 in the video.
Please enjoy!
