SHERMAN TANK IN SUNSET
It's my understanding that someone mis-read the tide tables, which resulted in the U.S. invasion of Saipan being launched at a very inopportune time. The water was just too high and the tanks got bogged down, making the American invaders sitting ducks. I have been told that there used to be many more tanks out in this lagoon, but that all but two were hauled out once hostilities died down. The decision to leave the 2 was from a purposeful desire to leave a proper memorial.
