MAY 19: BLACK NODDY ROOKERY

Down on Flame Tree Road, maybe 1/2 mile or so from the airport, are a few trees which are yearly adopted by black noddies (Anous minutus) as a rookery. I would guess there may be as many as 200 (just a guess) adult birds each year. This is the first year I have made a point of heading down there a few times to watch the development of the chicks.

  • Black noddies are sea birds, but not like albatross or some other sea birds in flying great distances over sea. They tend to spend considerable time on land and return to the sea for relatively short (50 miles or so) forages. Because of this (and also the fact that black noddies are wide spread in the tropics and subtropics), mariners in the days of exploration learned to look for them as a sign that some form of land was nearby (although the land may be just a small island).

  • The name "noddy" comes from the habit of ducking the head repeatedly during courship.
