Starting down the cliff at Naftan West. Who knows what adventures await us today?

• Starting down the cliff at Naftan West. Who knows what adventures await us today?
• After negotiating the cliff, we come to a nice, flat rocky area with an excellent view out over where the waves spash.

• Now back up the cliff and to the cave. Be sure to stay on the trail.....er.....what trail?
• The "cave" is actually a large sink hole with a vertical entry landward and a fabulous view seaward to the south (as you will see in the next photo).
• Here is the view out the cave. One of my favorite views on island.
You can see Tinian on the horizon.

• Can you find Jess in this panorama?

• We are now on "Naftan East" (the side of the peninsula opposite from where the previous photos and videos were taken). I was actually looking for a different overlook and discovered this one instead (which is actually better). You can see Forbidden Island way up there on the horizon, just to the left of the cliff.

• I call it the Old Sentinel.
• This large anti-ship gun was manufactured in England and sold to Japan prior to WWII hostilities. The Japanese set it here to guard against an invasion from the southeast. It's my understanding that it was never fired. It continues dutifully looking out over the Pacific as it slowly transforms into a rusty ghost.
• At the top of the central ridge of the Naftan Peninsula are three gun emplacement pits like the one you see here. The massive guns for these emplacements were in Kagman awaiting deployment when the U.S. launched the invasion of Saipan. It's my understanding that, even though these pits are on the side of the island opposite to where the U.S. invaded, they still could have played a role if they had been installed.
