JULY 9, 2011: KALABERA CAVE and HIDDEN BEACH

Kalabera Cave is named for the formation you see on the far wall. It is my understanding that "Kalabera" is Spanish for "Skull." I am standing on a concrete platform here, placed to anchor a catwalk which extends to a vertical ladder descending down to the bottom, probably about 30 feet (or more) down.

 • Kalabera Cave is named for the formation you see on the far wall. It is my understanding that "Kalabera" is Spanish for "Skull." I am standing on a concrete platform here, placed to anchor a catwalk which extends to a vertical ladder descending down to the bottom, probably about 30 feet (or more) down.
 • Here I have walked out onto the catwalk. I know that it is impossible to tell sizes here, but the bottom (to your lower right) is probably at least 30 feet below us. The "left eye" of the skull, I would estimate, is about 15 feet tall. I have heard that the area beneath the wall to your left extends another 50 feet straight down. Both this photo and the previous one were taken totally by existing light. The cave opening is behind us. Direct sunlight does not enter here. This exposure was for 3 minutes.

Archaeologists have found evidence here that people have inhabited Saipan for at least 3,000 years.
• This is a panorama of 8 photos put together for best exposure and focus at each point.
 • This photo is from about 10 steps behind where the last photo was taken. 10 photos in this panorama.
