• Relaxing with a drink and view on our veranda. I wish I could have brought this veranda (along with its ever-changing view) home with me.
• View from our veranda, then orca spouts (I think) viewed from Dennis and Judy's veranda.
• We moved all the way to the veranda of our next door neighbors to join Dennis and Judy on their veranda. By the way, if you are looking for some GREAT traveling friends, contact those two to your right. Actually, any (and / or all) of the three pictured here add nicely to a wonderful trip. And maybe Judy will leave her shoe in the doorway for you!
• Orca!
(Or so I think)
• You had to be up late or early to see the Lido Deck pool with no one in the pool -- or even in the room. This pool Is also associated with 4 hot tubs, each of a different temperature so you could choose room temp., lukewarm, fairly warm, or quite hot. The roof rolls back to open this up during good weather.
• Grand Princess.
• Juneau, the second-largest city in the U.S. (by area: Sitka, Alaska is the first), with a total of 3,253 square miles. For some reason, they decided to make the city limits extend all the way to the Canadian border. If I remember correctly, this means that the east/west extent of the city limits runs > 90 miles. It also makes this the only U.S. capital city which borders a foreign country.
• While Ketchikan is on an island (as are many of the towns along the Inside Passage), Juneau is on the mainland. However, there are no roads connecting it with the rest of Alaska or any part of the U.S.
• The mountains above Juneau hold the 1,500 square mile, 4,590 feet deep Juneau Icefield, which feeds about 30 glaciers. Mendenhall Glacier, seen here, extends 12 miles from the Juneau Icefield to Mendenhall Lake.
• Bev gazes over Nugget Falls toward Mendenhall Glacier.
• Nugget Falls is fed by Nugget Glacier, somewhere upriver from where we are here.

• Icebergs floating in Mendenhall Lake.
• From the Mendenhall Visitor Center.
• Mendenhall Glacier is 1/2 mile across at its terminus. The ice on the leading edge fell as snow more than 80 years ago. While the glacier itself is retreating, the flow brings the snow toward the lake (from the ice field 12 miles away) at a rate of about 1 to 2 feet per day.
• Any of y'all who know me well know that it's difficult for me to pass up a good tram ride. The Mount Roberts Tramway has its lower terminus right there at the dock. This is one of the shorter trams I've been on, but with a grade of 68% it's one of the most vertical tramways in the world.
• With a maximum speed of 23 miles per hour, this tram whisks you up the full extent of its 1,745 foot rise in no time.

The ship nearest the lower terminus of the tram (the one which the cables seem to be pointing to) is the Oosterdam (our lovely home for the week), by the way.
• On the way up, and then along the nice little Mount Roberts loop nature trail. If one is interested in further hiking, there are high country trails which connect with this one to get you into the wilderness. We stayed on the easy stuff, but I think there is plenty to challenge the most avid hiker, too.
• Interesting tree along the loop nature trail.
