• Totally cool rivers!
• This glacier empties into an amazing-looking lake, which you will see better in the next shot. But look at how the glacier flows down from the high ice field.
• I can find this on Google Maps and Google Earth, but there seems to be no name for the lake (or bay?) and the glacier. It's west of Yakutat and east of Kayak Island and Controller Bay. It seems to be within some sort of boundary, but I can't seem to find what the boundary is for: Tongass National Forest is to the southeast and Chugach National Forest is to the northwest. It's about 475 miles northwest of the entrance to Glacier Bay. At any rate, this looks to me like it would be a totally spectacular place do some boating. I think it would require much more boating knowledge / skill than what I have: The tidal currents into and out of that small inlet would likely be quite rapid, for instance (the little outlet that you see extending to your right from the "lake" is totally diverted by the little peninsula, which is continuous with the land). But man-oh-man, if I knew how to get a trusted boat pilot to take me into this little bay for a couple of days on a live-aboard boat I think that would be totally grand.
• Further south. Likely looking into Canada.
• Powell River, B.C.
• Here you can see more of the inland area. Powell River has been one of my favorite vacation destinations, also. Beautiful place. I wonder if the Laughing Oyster is still in business?
• Mount Baker, just barely over the border in WA. As you can see, sunset is approaching AND we are approaching the area most heavily affected by the fires.
• Mount Baker again as we pass near Anacortes, WA (the city in the foreground).
• Glacier Peak through the smoke (upper right).
• Ballard and Ballard Locks.
• Seattle as we pass over Elliott Bay. Notice the Space Needle?
• Anchorage to Seattle in 3 minutes, 11 seconds.
• Mount Rainer looms spectacularly above the Tacoma area. I believe that light to your right is another airplane approaching Seatac airport.
And that brings us into Seattle. Join us next week for family time in Bellingham!
