1. TRAVEL 2014
 2. CRUISE TO ALASKA!

THE JOURNEY BEGINS!

By golly: As I put these photos together I'm gettin' the hankerin' for goin' on another cruise ASAP! Anyone want to join me?

8/18/2020 update: OK. Even before all the Caronavirus stuff, I had totally shifted in relationship to the above statement. Given what I have learned about the cruise lines over the past year, I had decided several months ago that it is an entity which I can not support. I loved the experience and am glad that we did this while I was naive. With knowledge I don't think I could enjoy it again (even after the pandemic is over).

Judy is standing next to Rob Scheer, a national champion and promoter of lumberjack competitions. In fact, he was a log rolling champion as young as age 6! Then a speed climbing champion at age 30, and All Round Champion at age 36. He still competes, and also owns the Alaskan Lumberjack Show at Ketchikan. You'll see more about this in the next album, and you can also look a their website at http://alaskanlumberjackshow.com/ , if you are interested.
He actually let her hold his competition quality Lumberjack axe! I notice that he holds that hard hat pretty close, though.

 • It kept getting narrower and narrower. Sometimes it nearly looked like there COULDN'T be enough room for a ship as big as ours to pass just beyond that next bend...

 • There are two primary eating venues (and a hamburger bar and snack bar), the casual buffet on deck 7, and the more formal restaurant on decks 2 and 3. On all except for 2 nights even in the restaurant things are reasonably casual (men are supposed to have button shirts with a collar, as opposed to tee shirts any time in there). On 2 different evenings more formal dress is required. If one is not inclined to dress up, he can eat upstairs, but we decided to experience the formal dining.
I'd say that Dennis and Judy clean up quite well, don't you agree?
 • Pretty much all of the window tables in the more formal restaurant seat either 6 or 8. They have tables for 2 or 4 which are generally available if one does not desire a window and wishes for more privacy. So, for a party of 4, asking for a window seat ensures that you will meet some new folks at dinner time. What a view!
 • Speaking of view: This is from our bed.

 • Interesting huts, shacks, and other buildings line the shore as we approach Ketchikan.
 • Cruise ship Grand Princess ahead of us. We'll be docking at the wharf extending torward us in the foreground.
 • And this is Ketchikan! We'll disembark and explore this little town in the NEXT album. Hope to see you there!
