The Oosterdam's bow was closed for all of the trip except for the Glacier Bay leg. Here you see some of the scenery we passed, and the first video (of mine) from the bow (not all of the video is from the bow, but part is from when I got onto the bow for the first time).

  • Somewhere between Skagway and Glacier Bay. The sunrises and sunsets (this is a sunrise) were different from what I'm used to: The twilight phase would linger and linger and linger. Sometimes individual clouds would seem to come alive with color while most of the rest of the sky remained gray (notice the cloud toward the end of this video).
  • Continuing to watch the sunrise as we anticipate entering Glacier Bay.
  • As we entered Glacier Bay, this small boat came out to deliver a bay pilot to take control of the Oosterdam, a park ranger to give interpretive services, and a Tlingit Indian lady to enlighten us about the local culture. They came out early AM, and I must not have risen quite early enough to get a shot of them approaching. At any rate, the little boat pulls up along side the Oosterdam and the folks come on board while we are in motion.<br /> <br /> I wasn't in the ideal place for the video: There is a better video of them disembarking from the Oosterdam toward the end of this album.
  • Sea lions on a rock, and the National Geographic Sea Lion excursion boat.
  • I saw what I thought was driftwood we were approaching. But as we got closer and I saw two feet sticking out of the water, I knew it was a sea otter floating on her back.
  • Acting just the way an otter oughta'.

  • I do want to head back up there, hopefully summer 2015, to take a smaller craft excursion. If any of y'all know the best folks to contact for that, please let me know!

  • Ice, rivers, mountains, clouds. From 1 minute in (about the last 30 seconds) is from our veranda.
  • One of the further south glaciers, perhaps Reid Glacier.<br /> "He Bev, whatchaa seeing through those binoculars?"
  • Wow! THAT's what she was seeing through the binoculars! Kayakers at the base of the glacier.
  • We were both smiling deeply on this trek!
  • Down on deck 3. Closer to the water than the other observation decks, and you had these huge open-air windows (no glass to look through). It was cold down here, though.
  • As we progressed north, we would start seeing little pieces of floating ice. Then we would see more and more pieces, larger and larger, until we would pass a glacier. The the water would then be nearly ice free for a while. Once you started seeing ice again, you knew that we were approaching another glacier.
  • Looking out our veranda at ice and a fog bank. Beautiful when you are reasonably certain that it will not be ALL that you see!
