  • As we head back toward Kona (and the Hilton Waikoloa), descending into Waimea. The mountain you see is Mauna Kea. See the telescope housings on top?
  • Now you can see them better (the telescope housings). A trip up to them is highly recommended (been there, done that, but will likely do it sometime again: GREAT place to watch the sun set). Notice the snow to your right from the telescopes.
  • And speaking of watching the sun set. Even in the north part of Big Island, vog from the Kilauea area makes for some amazing colors and weird atmospheric appearance.
  • Yep: That's the horizon. It looked to us like there was a huge wall of water: It just did not look like that could really be the horizon.

  • Almost knee-deep grass above Waimea.
  • Now we are taking the south highway to Hilo. Punaluu is one of our favorite beach spots, so we just could not pass by without paying a visit again. This is one of only a very few places in the whole world where sea turtles crawl out of the water just to bask in the sun and sleep. Other places their excursions onto land are limited to egg laying.
  • Our address for the next 2 nights would be at the Inn at Kulaniapia Falls. Step out the back door of our room, take about 10 steps, and this is your view. You can imagine the soothing sound -- great to relax and sleep to all night long.

  • There is a nice nature walk where you can see 16 different types of bamboo. The owner has placed interesting interpretive signs identifying different types and their characteristics.
