HONG KONG XI: The Final One
THE TUNNEL
I guess the English put an extra "LE" in the word jewelry. At any rate, this jewellery store was located in a historically significant building due to WW II activities here. A large and prominent sign in the window stated "We have tried hard to conserve every inch of it, especially a historical bomb shelter we meticulously enclosed in our store." It further said "Please feel free to come inside and visit our bomb shelter tunnel, which is one of the remaining few historical structures in Hong Kong. Cameras are welcome."
So, we entered the store and asked if we could see the bomb shelter tunnel. I can't remember exactly what the jeweler said, but it was basically that people were not allowed into the tunnel. So, we exited the store and were on our way to the water front when the jeweler (in my memory it was the same guy, but perhaps I'm remembering that wrong) stepped out and said, very matter-of-factly "Would you like to see the bomb shelter tunnel?" We answered affirmatively, and he showed us the way to the tunnel.
Just one of those conversation experiences which make you think "Huh?"

on June 12, 2018You are probably more accurate in your memory than am I. What I remember most, however, is that (it seemed to me) when they asked if we wanted to see the tunnel, it was in a tone of voice as though none of the preceding conversation had taken place. It sounded to me like an honest and earnest invitation to come in and see this landmark they were so proud of. I remember thinking "Um, that's what we just ASKED you for..."

on June 12, 2018hhehe.....the way I remember it.....we basically BEGGED to see it and they were very decisive in their NO. So we just stood there....for what seemed like a long time and we asked again.....and they said NOOOO. We went out side, re-read the sign, and just stood there in awe that they weren't letting us in. I think it became more of a project than an interest for me. We just stood there. The way I remember it, we were still just standing there when one of them came out and asked if we'd like to see the tunnel. AND we saw the tunnel.....and it was pretty interesting......beyond the 'project'.
