PANORAMA: LAKE CHELAN FROM LAKE CHELAN STATE PARK
Lake Chelan: At about 1,486 feet in depth, it's the 3rd deepest lake in the U.S. (Crater Lake {1,949 feet} and Lake Tahoe {1,644} are deeper). With a surface elevation of 1,100 feet, however, about 10% of Lake Chelan's water is actually below sea level. Glaciers carved this valley, creating a lake which averages about 1 mile wide and more than 50 miles long. With the west end of the lake edged by mountains, some of which exceed elevation of 7,000 feet, Lake Chelan is often called a fjord-like lake.
