VLBA RADIO TELESCOPE, Brewster, WA

That dish you see is 82 feet (25 meters) across and weighs 240 tons. This radio telescope is one of ten scattered across the United States which make up the Very Long Baseline Array. They coordinate together to give celestial resolutions far greater than any one unit would be capable of. Scientists are also able to use the coordinated data to study shifts in the earth's crust and rotation.

 • A nice playground for the kids.
 • When I went to this festival years ago (when I lived in WA, so it must have been at least 18 years go), it seems that many of the vehicles were either decorated old VW minibuses like this or were old full-size buses which had other vehicle bodies (often VW minibus) welded on top to create rather bizarre-looking (but in an interesting way) 2-story vehicles. I did not see any of those double-deckers this year.
 • While the more unique welded double-decker vehicles seem to have vanished, as you can see in the background more "mainstream" campers and motor homes seem to predominate now.

I was only there for a part of the first day this time, so maybe the more unique vehicles tend to come later, but I doubt it.

 • I purchased that cup and a nice saucer to go with it, and wanted a photo of the lady who made it. It actually got back to Saipan undamaged!

Lots of different kinds of wares sold at this faire, from junky trinkets to venerable antiques to high quality ceramics (as you see here) and other crafts.
 • Again, lots of "mainstream" camper-vehicles (and lots of top-mounted air conditioners). None of the more memorable vehicles which used to stand above the crowd.

But people do obviously enjoy it here.

 • As evening approaches, there will be lots of tents erected on yonder hill by folks planning to spend the night. In the center of the faire grounds will be a community fire, probably surrounded by a drum circle and dancers. The drumming generally continues steadily all night, with the individual drummers coming and going -- joining in when the mood strikes -- often drumming along in unison with the group for from one to several hours, then yielding to someone else, who will keep the beat going with no interruptions.
