AUGUST, 2012: WA II -- CUTTHROAT PASS

We headed north early AM. There was a wide-spread grass / brush fire we passed just prior to sunrise. As the sun came up, we were a few miles beyond the fire, but there was enough smoke in the upper atmosphere to allow the sun to greet us with some glorious colors. Here we are along the Methow river just west of Pateros.

  • Looks like the Boss Man is saying it's time to head for the trail.
  • At the trail head parking lot.
  • Lots of nice streams / waterfalls running down to and over the trail.
  • The Cutthroat Pass Trail is a part of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, which extends 2,600 miles (from Mexico to Canada) over the Sierra and Cascade ranges. We hiked about 5 miles (10 miles round trip), gaining elevation from 4,800 feet at the trail head to 6,800 feet at the summit.
  • As always, Zac did the entire trail barefoot.

  • That "bridge" that Tom is standing near was a VERY substantial 1/2 log. Yet it was broken very cleanly in two! It looked like there must have been some very strong natural force which fractured it, but there was no sign as to what it may have been.
  • About half of the trail is down in a fairly dense forest.

  • I'm sure he nailed it.

  • Taking a little break from hiking at a camp site.
  • The latter half of the trail steepens a bit and takes you up above timber line.
