  • I've always been confused in attempting to distinguish between huckleberries and wild mountain blueberries. Now I'm even more confused. I'm virtually certain that my AUDUBON FIELD GUIDES, which are in WA now (and I'm on Saipan, so I can't look it up) distinguished them as two different species with certain descriptions telling the difference. As I attempt to look up the difference on the web, however, I find one website which claims that in the U.S. huckleberries grow only in the eastern half of the country. Another website (Wikipedia), if I understand it correctly, states that there really is no scientific classification difference and that whether the plant (and berry) is called a blueberry or huckleberry depends totally on local custom. So, I really don't know whether these are blueberries or huckleberries, but by whichever name, they are just as delicious!
  • Yup. Still at Picture Lake. It's not my fault that they named it wrong. It should be "Pictures Lake."
  • Mountain blueberries (or huckleberries?) taking on their beautiful fall colors. I have no doubt but what it snowed on these plants a few short weeks after we were there. Definitely one of my favorite plants: As beautiful as they are tasty.

  • So, from Picture Lake we made our way to the end of the road, at Artist Point Parking Area. Mount Shuksan towers in the background.
