Mr. Yamoto, the owner of the Shimaya Ryokan (where we stayed) took us to the trail head. He would also come to pick us up any time we called him. Tremendous customer service. I asked him how long he had owned Shimaya. He smiled and said "6 generations." When I mentioned this to a Japanese American fellow (who speaks Japanese), he (the Japanese American fellow) told me that the name Yamoto means "hot spring."<br />

  • This is what about 80% of the trail looked. Very wide, level, flat, and easy to stroll. Extends for about a mile.<br />

  • Looking down on Jigokudani Ryokan, the guest house nearest to the monkey park. As you can see, there is a steam geyser near the river. Also, the pools you see to your right from the buildings along the far side of the river are the hot spring pools for the guests here. It's my understanding that the macaques are also frequent visitors here, often bathing along with the human guests. We did see some men in this pool once, totally naked (the "norm" for enjoying hot springs in Japan).
  • Entering into the JIGOKUDANI YAEN-KOEN (Monkey Park) for our second visit. Much like going to a huge macaque exhibit at a great zoo, except that there are no bars to separate you from the macaques, and the macaques just act like you were not there. It was a little cooler on our second day, so you will see more steam rising from the hot spring.<br />

  • "Now let's figure this out: You had 3 men check into the hotel. The clerk said $10 per person. Later, the hotel owner said it should be $25 for the room, so he gave the bellhop $5 to take back to the people. On the way, the bellhop decided that since $5 could not be evenly divided by three, he would return $3 only, and he pocketed the remainder. So that makes $27 paid by the tourists, plus the $2 in the bellhop's pocket makes $29. Where the dickens is that other $1????"<br />

"I think I will have to use my fingers AND toes to figure THIS one out!"
  • "Hmmmm. Gotta think that through again.....OK, there were three guys....."<br />

Fingernails look surprisingly nicely trimmed on these critters.
  • Macaque version of the child seat.
  • The babies look so much like they are wearing hoods. I kept almost expecting them to take their coats off (almost, but not quite).
  • Expressive beasts.

  • Notice hands AND feet resting above the water.
  • Same adult from the previous photo, nursing her young 'en.
  • A little nursing action video.
