These totally cool gullies running roughly parallel to the channel of Athabasca Falls are old channels, long abandoned by the river. Of course, the evenly-spaced stair steps came a bit later.

  • We decided to have a "picnic" lunch where we had a nice view. Sunwapta River in the valley.
  • Tangle Falls.

  • Bubbling Springs. A little cold pool with water percolating up through soft sand.
  • Again, Bri does what's necessary to get the shot!
  • Here is a close-up of the bubbling part. The black lines are likely from iron or some other heavy metal in the soil, which tends to run to the low portion as the percolating water creates little sand mounds. It's a kaleidoscope of white/black/pink sand constantly changing before your eyes. Pretty cool, actually.
  • Here, just behind the fence, you can see Bri, Zac, and Bev. On the other side of the fence (from them) is Sunwapta Falls.
  • Bev, Zac, and I decide to take a trail down to the fall. This takes us to the side opposite from where they were in the last photo.
  • Among one of the local native tribes (Cree, perhaps, but I'm not sure), Sunwapta means turbulent waters.
  • I guess this is probably a raven that Bri is photographing. If anyone can tell from the photo whether or not it is indeed a raven, please let us know by leaving a comment. I guess I started thinking it must be a raven when it started saying "nevermore" over and over again.
  • Down the road just a little further is Athabasca Falls. The name Athabasca comes from the Cree word athapask-a-aw, which was actually first used to name a nearby lake (which we did not visit). It means "grass or reeds here and there."

  • We've walked down one of the old channels. Athabasca Falls is beyond the two bridges you see behind us.
  • I love the lines in the sandstone. You can imagine the water gushing through here and wearing it down with time.

  • Then on into Jasper for dinner and Motel. I can't for the life of me remember the name of this place, and I have been pulling up web pages like crazy without finding any which sound familiar. Bri, you were able to remember the pub in Banff. Do you remember this restaurant? Zac? Bev? This was another quite excellent meal, although it may not have quite matched what we had in Banff. This place basically had a forest of tropical plants all over and was, to a large extent, sort of a greenhouse / restaurant (with glass above us and on 3 sides).
