Believe it or not, there will be other places quite photo-worthy on our journey. In our next album, we get to Yoho National Park, high in the Canadian Rockies! Yep, these aren't even the Rockies yet. The Canadian Selkirk Mountain Range.

  • Looks like a very serious discussion!
  • Taking the Trans Canada Highway a bit further east, we enter Canada's Glacier National Park and start up Roger's Pass. Near the top of the pass, completion of a rail road line through here was considered THE crowning achievement in finishing the Trans Canada Railway. Regular service by the trains, starting in 1885, allowed a booming resort, called Glacier House, to bloom here.
  • Glacier House was one of Canada's premier destinations, and it catered to many distinguished guests from all over the world. However, along the rail bed avalanches were common, as were deaths of railway workers. Eventually a 5.5 mile rail tunnel was dug, and by 1917 this portion of track was totally abandoned. The Trans Canada Highway did not arrive until 1962. Glacier House stayed in business until about 1927, by ferrying guests up from the rail tunnel entrance with horse and buggy. However, discontinuation of rail service here started the irreversible process of death for this once proud and bustling business.
  • Trails fan out from the Glacier House area. One can use this as a launching point to spend days traversing the peaks, or (as we did), can make the most of a few minutes roaming the trails near the Glacier House. This bridge is about a 10 minute walk from the area of the last photo. You are looking up the Asulken Valley.
  • Illecillewaet River from the bridge in the last photo.
  • Photo from one of the interpretive signs. Can you imagine having to dig a steam rail road engine out of the snow like this?
  • As we were approaching the little village of Roger's Pass, the mountains were suddenly so spectacular that we ALL HAD to get multiple photos!
  • Now come on, you've got to admit that the Selkirk Mountains, which you are seeing here, are some pretty impressive hills! Notice the hanging glacier toward the top.
  • See what I mean about the pictures?
