THE journey begins....

After a 5 hour flight to Narita and then a 10 hour flight from Narita to Seattle, it was very nice to see Bev. She had stayed in Seattle at a Motel while I was in flight. With me arriving early AM and us not flying out until early PM, it gave a welcome opportunity to go to the motel and relax. As you can see, she has Euros in her left hand and Swiss Francs in her right, so we are ready to head to Germany! <br />

  • Flight into Amsterdam airport was late enough to not allow us to make our connection. We knew that Briana would be waiting for us at the Frankfurt Airport Bahnhof (train station). So Bev makes the necessary communication about the changes.
  • Because of the missed connection, KLM was kind enough to give us vouchers for food at the airport (after Bev asked for them), so we decided to enjoy ourselves on them. Can you see Bev in the restaurant?
  • I guess this is what I look like after having Mediterranean food! Problem is, I'm afraid it's not any better BEFORE the Mediterranean food, or other times either! Oh well, I'm only a few days from 50 in this photo. You know, nowadays patients come in to see me and I think "I hope I'm doing as well as he is when I'm his age." Then I look at the chart and am surprised to see that I AM his age!
  • We looked, but did not indulge in the chocolates, since we knew that we would want some when we got to Switzerland!
  • Fountain at Amsterdam Airport.
  • We still had some left over from our vouchers after lunch, so here we enjoy some dessert and espresso drinks, all the while hoping that Bri had called Patti in WA to find out why we weren't there as we said we would be. Ain't it great to live in a time when you can be late getting into the Netherlands, then call the U.S. to leave a message for someone in Germany?!
  • Finally, we are Frankfurt bound! Hey, Marlo, what can you tell me about those jets?
  • I've never seen clouds like these. There must have been at least 10 layers of thin clouds. Briana says that this is how they are a lot in Germany.
  • Final descent into Frankfurt.
  • Bev and Bri at Frankfurt Airport Bahnhof. We carried all that we would need for the trip on our backs......
  • ....and took trains all over Germany
  • The trains really are comfortable and relaxing (usually).
  • Untitled photo
  • Here you see Bri's and Bev's reflections over the Mosel River.
  • Our first hostel was in Trier, which claims to be the oldest town in Germany. Of course other towns also make such a claim, but Trier is supposedly the settlement with the earliest documentation of coming into being as a city, as opposed to being a military camp or temporary settlement. As interesting as Trier was, it was the most miserable day we spent on our trip: Very cold and rainy, with the type of humidity which penetrates the cold right into your bones.
  • You see a museum in the background, but it was not open while we were there. Human settlement is evidenced by pottery here from the stone age. According to legend, the town was founded by Trebeta, the son of the Assyrian king Ninus, around 2,000 years B.C. That is about 1,300 years BEFORE the rise of Rome! It became an official Roman City no later than 16 B.C.
  • This structure, the Roman Baths, was built during the reign of Constantine the Great (306-337 A.D.). Unfortunately, we found that the Baths were mostly fenced in due to construction (or, more hopefully, preservation activities) on the site. Included were a cold water bath, a warm water bath, and a hot water swimming pool in a room measuring 37 x 20 meters. Notice the unusual alternating pattern in the wall. Limestone layers alternate with brick to give a uniquely aesthetic quality to the stucture. I hope I look that aesthetically pleasing when I'm that old!
  • A tunnel under the road provides a pallette for local grafitti artists. As you will see in future albums, this type of grafitti seems to have a much higher stature in Germany than what it does in the states.
  • I don't know if you can tell how many layers I have on, but there are several underneath that raincoat. Let's see now, what time is it?
