  • We did, however, take a nice drive up to Mauna Loa Lookout, which has some interesting plants.

  • Bev is heading up the trail.  Just another 7.5 miles (and a gain of about 7,000 feet in elevation) would get her up to the rim of the Mauna Loa crater.  I've heard that it is a rather challenging trail.  Guess we better head back to Kona instead.....
  • Cool trees up here.  And with that, we descend back down to the southern coast and resume our trip toward the Kona (west) side of Hawaii.

    'A'ali'i (Dodonaea viscosa)... they are used for lei. See http://www2.hawaii.edu/~eherring/hawnprop/dod-visc.htm
