And there we saw it! Pele's finger reaching the sea! We would see the glow, then a wave would cool it, then sometimes a few seconds later, sometimes a minute or two later, the glow would re-appear. Another "Awwwe!" Then an "OOOhhh!" As it got darker, the glow became easier to see and seemed to be more consistent.

  • That's where it's nice to have a bit of a telephoto lens. And, I also heard that one can actually get closer, if one hikes in from the National Park, on a 12-mile (each way) trail. We did not feel that we had time for that.
  • As it got darker and darker, we kept watching and watching, mesmerized by the steam. Then, all at once, the whole crowd clapped and shouted "AAAwwww!"

  • Eventually, it was dark enough that you could even see the glow in the steam above the lava.
  • Then, it got dark enough to pretty much get to the limit of my camera's ability to catch the image (without a tripod: I have many photos showing the glow with everything very blurred because I could not hold the camera still enough for the shutter speed. In fact, you can see some such blur in this photo).
  • I set the ISO as high as it can go, in the hope that it would catch some of the glow. It did (over Bev's shoulder), but you can also see lots of "noise" in the photo because of that. Oh well: Nice memory. I'm glad that Pele was willing to give us such a show!
