Hard to believe that this is all one individual tree (Banyan's send down multiple roots). For more on this remarkable tree, see the night photo of it in the following album: <a href="http://www.optimimagery.com/Travel/JANUARY-2011-MAUI/MAUI-I/15832180_SMaEo">http://www.optimimagery.com/Travel/JANUARY-2011-MAUI/MAUI-I/15832180_SMaEo</a>

  • Lahaina Harbor as we wait to for a Pacific Whale Foundation tour boat.
  • Thank goodness, that's not the one we are waiting for.<br />

  • Looking toward Lanai from the water.
  • Spouting whale!

  • The humpback whales come down here to calve in the winter.
  • They spend their summers in the waters around Alaska.
  • These huge mammals fast the entire time they are in the Hawaiian waters.
  • Then, it's back north to gorge themselves on plankton (humpbacks are baleen whales, which means that they feed on some of the smallest critters in the sea) before returning for another season of adding to the next generation.
  • Not much to see on this video, but the sound is a recording of the humpback whales' song while we were on the boat. I uploaded this in very low video resolution, so it should buffer very quickly.
  • Time to head back to shore.<br />
<br />
If you are interested in learning more about whales, and finding out what you can do to help ensure the survival of these magnificent creatures, look at the Pacific Whale Foundation's website: <a href="http://www.pacificwhale.org/">http://www.pacificwhale.org/</a>
  • Now, dinner at Canoe Restaurant. A marvelous dining experience. We found this place last year and it was one of those that we just HAD to return to.<br />

(although I would rate them much higher than the Trip Advisor 3-star!).<br />

Or, call 808-661-0937 for reservations now!
  • Then breakfast was at an equally remarkable place. These awards adorn the Gazebo Restaurant (there are several more of them -- I think they won the Best Breakfast Restaurant Award from this magazine for every year). The only catch: This is a very small restaurant and they do not take reservations. They apparently have an outstanding reputation, with people willing to stand in line for substantial time to get in. The couple in front of us had eaten breakfast there earlier and returned to the line so that they could get seating for lunch!
  • The view is great. Once you are in, the service is good. The signature dish is their coconut pancakes. A delicious way to start the day.<br />
<br />
I agree with their nearly 5-star Trip Advisor rating. See <a href="http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g60634-d404362-Reviews-Gazebo_Restaurant_at_Napili_Shores-Lahaina_Maui_Hawaii.html">http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g60634-d404362-Reviews-Gazebo_Restaurant_at_Napili_Shores-Lahaina_Maui_Hawaii.html</a><br />
<br />
No use calling, since they don't make reservations. You can see them on the Map This function above, however, if you need directions.
