  • See any humpback whales out there?
  • NICE breach!
  • Ker SPLASH!
  • Now let me tell you about a tale of a whale: Well, there it is on on your screen right now!
  • Back in Kona, the night before flying out.
  • We shared adjacent rooms at Seaside Hotel Kona.
  • Bev in the pool, Mom and Dad on the 6th-floor balcony.
  • I can't remember the name of this place. It was a short walk from the hotel. One of those places where you get a discount coupon as you check into your room.
  • Most of the street lighting in Kona (and all over Big Island, really) is a very un-attractive yellow. The reason for this is that this particular wavelength happens to have the least affect on the Mauna Kea telescopes (apparently significant even though the telescopes are about 40 miles away and 13,600 feet higher!). Apparently private owners are not under restrictions as to lighting. This leads to an interesting combination of hues! By the way, the ghostly appearance of the foreground is simply due to a 30-second exposure over small waves on water.
  • Another 30-second night exposure, this time from the second-floor of a water-front building. The timing of the cyclist was pure luck!
  • I flew out fairly early AM. Bev left a few hours later, but arrived in Saipan several hours earlier (she flew through Guam, I flew through Narita, as you will see in the following shots). Mom and Dad flew out a day after Bev, also through Guam. Here, I'm on approach to Honolulu. Seemed like we came in quite low on this flight, giving an interesting perspective of Oahu.
  • My very "favoritist" restaurant in all of Japan (not that I have been all over). Excellent spicy red pepper soup! Besides the food, this place is also quite interesting because it is usually full of airline employees from Australia, Germany, France, and U.S.A., among others. It is apparently one of the favorite places for people who travel through here due to their profession, too! Very easy to get to in the old part of Narita. In fact, if you have never done the walk from the Narita Station to the Naritasan Shinshoji Temple area, that is a total "must see!"

  • See you back in Saipan!
