Seaside Hotel, Hilo. Nothing fancy, but (in my opinion), well worth the price.
• Liliuokalani Gardens. This is within easy walking distance of Seaside Hotel Hilo.
 • Rainbow Falls is blocks from downtown Hilo. The area actually consists of several waterfalls along a stretch of a few miles of the Wailuku River. The water flow through here varies tremendously. I have heard that during unusually dry times there will be no flow at all. Other times all of the rock you see over the Fall here will be covered by a torrent. Some areas of the watershed receive well over 200 inches of rain per year, though, so I'm sure that a total cessation of flow is somewhat rare.
 • Bev and Dad photographing the pink flowers of banana trees. We don't have this particular type of banana here in Saipan. This one is unusual both for the light color of the "flower," and for the fact that the banana stalks are upright, not hanging as most bananas.
 • Also, at this stage in growth the bananas we have on Saipan are all green, turning yellow as they mature.
 • If you like fresh veggies and tasty Italian fare, then I recommend Cafe Pesto, located in a historic building in downtown Hilo.
• North of Hilo, just outside of the small village of Honomu, is spectacular Akaka Falls.
 • Spend the next 1 minute and 11 seconds watching and listening to the water fall over the waterfall. I would send you the cool mist, if I could.
 • flowers along a refreshing nature walk at Akaka Falls.

 • In Honomu stand two mighty trees -- commemorating two enemies.
Two sons, one American, one Japanese.
Claimed by war: Two Mothers wept.

Two Mothers -- one American, one Japanese,
TOGETHER planted two tiny trees.
In memory of two sons, and in hope that peace be kept.

So stand in Honomu and feel the cool breeze -- as you behold the size of these two trees....
Two grieving Mothers, one American, one Japanese
watered with tears as they wept.
 • Laupahoehoe Point Park
 • Laupahoehoe Point. Fairly long video (3 minutes, 42 seconds), but if you like watching waves, you may enjoy it. Also, see how long it takes for you to figure out the opening scene.
 • Waipi'o Valley. Refreshingly underdeveloped. These are the lands containing the sacred platform of the high chief Liloa. In ancient times, only those who led a righteous lifestyle were allowed to ascend this platform.

 • While we were at Laupahoehoe Point, a lady told us that the best treat on the road ahead was "Texas Drive In," where they had wonderful donuts. We looked and looked and looked for the Texas Drive In. Well, this is it (sort of -- you'll see the joke in 2 more pictures). The pastry they specialize in is the malasada, basically a cream- or jelly-filled donut (a lot like a Berliner, except rolled in sugar). Warm and fresh, they are indeed mighty tasty.
 • Outdoor dining surrounded by wonderful colors.
