  • Hey, Jim: When do I get to see YOUR bighorn photos?

  • And HERE is Goose Lake! Look at the wall just to the right of the snow patch. That's right, the one with the switchback trail going up it. The next few photos will be from there.
  • The immediately previous photo was from the other end of the lake from here. The south side has a meandering stream, delivering melt-water from nearby snow. Taz decided to take Marsha and Steve for a walk over here to see me off on my trek up the ridge.
  • There is a small pond maybe 100 yards south of Goose Lake, as you see here behind Marsha and Steve.
  • Looking northwest from a little way up the ridge. I was wearing a bright red windbreaker, which made me quite visible. I didn't realize until I got down how many people down below were watching and wanting to make sure that I made it to the top of the ridge.
  • I had to stop at each switchback to take another picture (and catch my breath!).
  • Can you find Marsha and Steve in this photo? Remember, Marsha is in red also. Look on this side of the lake, immediately to your right from where the little inlet stream joins the lake.
  • I made it to the top of the ridge! The trail then continues up to the north, to the top of Gold Hill.   • So, after I lingered for a while, I turned and started back down. Anyone interested in skiing Taos: There it is.
  • There is the little pond you saw earlier (maybe 100 yards south of Goose Lake), and a marshland beyond.
  • The weary traveler returns!
  • "It sure was nice down here while Mark was up on that ridge...."
  • Now, back down the mountain to look for more mines and cabins. The little stream you see here is coming from an old, collapsed mine.
  • I thought that the pantry in this cabin was pretty impressive. Yep: These old sentinels of the days of yore are slowly loosing their voices, vanishing into the earth, the last traces of a bygone era erased forever. Thanks, Mom and Dad, for the excursion and chance to visit the past.
  • Somehow I get the idea that this fellow would prefer for us to stay on this side of the fence. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like folks may not exactly be welcomed with open arms on the other side.
  • Thus ends our excursion up the New Mexico Super Highway to Goose Lake, as we cross the Red River at the bottom of the pass.
  • Time for some well-deserved rest!
  • Meanwhile, the hummingbirds keep coming, well into the evening.
