The river you see in the distance left-of-center is the Columbia, elevation in that area about 710 feet. The small hump between the bodies of water is Little Butte. Lake Chelan, elevation 1,100 feet, is to your right from Little Butte and is northwest of us as we take the photos.

  • Slightly later in the evening, looking northwest over Lake Chelan.
  • We have walked on up Butte Road to the summit, to an elevation of about 3,800 feet, and are looking northwest over Lake Chelan.
  • Also from the top, looking south over the Columbia river. The curved streak of light near the center of your screen is from headlights of cars on Highway 97A. Immediately to your left from that is the Columbia River. Then, on the east shore of the river you see the lights of Orondo, and then traffic on Highway 97. This exposure was made over 3 minutes, in which time the earth rotates just far enough to give you the interesting little dashes for the stars (Well, OK: the brighter dash to your upper right is probably Venus). If it weren't smoky, you would be able to see the lights of Wenatchee, the largest city in Chelan County, about 15 miles or so beyond Orondo.
  • As we were walking back down the Butte Road, I could not resist setting up my tripod again and taking one last shot over Lake Chelan.
