  • The Illecillewaet River (roughly pronounced "illy silly wet") flows by the campground near the old Glacier House.
  • I'm not sure how to tell the difference between wild mountain blueberries and huckleberries. It really doesn't matter, however, when you see them. Both taste like what store-bought blueberries wish they could taste like. These were all over the campground. YUM, YUM!
  • After setting up the tent, we went on a short walk up a nature trail next to the Illecillewaet River.
  • Meeting of the Waters Bridge. The Illecillewaet River to your left (next to Bev), The Asulkan Brooke to your right (next to Bri). This is a panorama of several photos combined. If you are interested in seeing great detail, click on the photo, then click on the "O" which will appear at the top center of your screen. Navigate by using the scroll bars on the right and bottom of your screen. If you click on the large photo, you will return to this album page.
  • Illecillewaet glacier, then River, from the Meeting of the Waters. In the latter part of the 1800's this was called the Great Glacier, and it extended down into the valley, probably to at or near where we are standing. The Canadian Pacific Railway used this as the first pass for the first Canadian Transcontinental Railway, and a resort (Glacier House) just a few yards from here became one of the most famous destinations for elite folks from all over the globe.
  • Time for some hot chocolate, wine, and dinner by a fire. Then, to bed.
  • Next day, we started up the trail again, up through the old Glacier House grounds (which are just up this trail a little farther). Because the grade up to this pass was so steep and the snowfall so extreme, Canadian Pacific eventually completed a tunnel through the mountain and then abandoned this pass. It became much more of a chore to get to Glacier House, so it fell out of favor, and a few years after the tunnel was opened, grand old Glacier House closed.<br />

  • Bev and Bri get some great macros. You'll see a couple of mine later.
  • A bit beyond Meeting of the Waters, looking up at the rock slope and glacier.
  • Bri and me on the Illecillewaet River.
  • Illecillewaet River. The glacier is just below the cloud you see peaking up to your right from center. Spectacular, stark rock slope.
  • Rainbows in the reflections. No oil sheen, as far as I could tell. It just seemed like a clean refractive rainbow (no rainbow in the sky, just in the puddle).
  • You get more and more open spaces as you go farther up the trail. Can you find Bri in this photo?
  • Moss macro.

  • Do you know of any place more beautiful?

  • It was cool enough that this bee had pretty much shut down. Made the photo much easier.
  • Illecillewaet Glacier is hidden from view just above Bri. But don't fret, the view is still spectacular!

..hmmm. Maybe Bev showed me a few of these when i was in the shop awhile ago. They 'sort-of' look familiar...But with the 'sporadic' Internet service i have been getting lately (as in NO service, no internet at the house, etc.; hard to say!!)
