  • Looking back down the valley to the south, toward Durango.
  • Zac has amazing knowledge of edible wild plants and how best to enjoy them.

  • Lime Creek, I believe.
  • Molas Pass.
  • Molas Lake in the valley.
  • Can you imagine lugging 20" x 24" glass plates around to get photos? I believe that the technology referred to on this sign also required a make-shift on-site darkroom to develop the plates in the field. What would William Henry Jackson think if he were here to see our current digital stuff? Not to mention the fact that he would now have paved highways upon which to transport his digital camera! His donkey would probably be very grateful.
  • Descending into Silverton.
  • Mineral-rich, colorful, exposed soil slope.
  • Probably the most famous tourist attraction around here is the narrow gauge train. I was a little upset with myself for not planning well enough to have time to ride this on this trip (I rode it when I was a kid, and still have some pretty amazing memories from it). I got to talking with a local fellow, however, who told me that the previous night two avalanches covered the track. No one was hurt, but the train was not going to be able to make the trip for several days. So, this was not the year for us to make the train trip! Maybe next year.....

  • San Juan County Courthouse.
  • Looks like the Sheriff, but his business card said that he is a "Hired Gun." I asked him what that meant, and he basically just smiled and said that I need to come back and see him when I need a hired gun.
  • Nice to have some entertaining surroundings at the public restrooms.<br />
In case you can't read the tomb stones: "LOLA FENT -- KICKED UP HER HEELS AND AWAY SHE WENT"<br />
"R.I.P. -- I TOLD YOU I WAS SICK"<br />
"HERE LIES Lester Moore. TOLD A LIE. NO LES. NO MORE."
  • Bev found a cool mineral and gem shop and was able to secure some interesting specimens for her Chelan shop.
